Expiration date: 12/1/2028

About this Module:
Implanting neuromodulation devices demands precision, careful planning, and adherence to best practices that promote patient safety and long-term success. This asynchronous educational activity features three expert-led procedural cadaver videos guiding learners through the essential steps of spinal cord stimulator (SCS) and intrathecal drug delivery system (IDDS) implantation. Each presentation emphasizes core surgical principles, anatomical considerations, and evidence-based safety measures aimed at minimizing complications and optimizing outcomes. Together, these presentations provide clinicians with a comprehensive procedural framework for both spinal cord stimulator and intrathecal pump implantation. By combining expert instruction with practical safety protocols and thorough documentation standards, this module empowers learners to perform advanced neuromodulation procedures with confidence, precision, and excellence in patient care.

Planning Committee:
Alexander Bautista, MD; Timothy Feldheim, MD; Henry Huang, MD; Michael Staudt, MD, MSC; and Robert Yong, MD.

Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Physicians, Physician’s Assistants, Pain Medicine Physicians, Physical Medicine and Rehab Physicians, Fellows, Residents, Trainees

Following participation in this activity learners will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomical indications and contraindications for the implantation of various neuromodulation devices.
  • Demonstrate proper surgical site sterile preparation, incision planning, dissection techniques, and principles of hemostasis to minimize complications.
  • Review standard surgical techniques and device-specific considerations for optimal neuromodulation hardware implantation.

Presentation 1: Spinal Cord Stimulator Implantation
Faculty: Corey Hunter, MD

Dr. Hunter demonstrates safe and effective techniques for spinal cord stimulator lead placement. The presentation emphasizes patient safety, sterile technique, and procedural documentation. Learners will gain high-yield insights into each stage of implantation—from access to closure—while reinforcing their mastery through integrated knowledge checks.

Presentation 2: Intrathecal Drug Delivery System Implantation

Faculty: Alaa A. Abd El-Sayed, MD, MPH

Dr. Abd El-Sayed provides a step-by-step overview of intrathecal pump placement, highlighting site selection, preoperative planning, catheter tunneling, and secure anchoring. This presentation underscores the anatomical and technical precision required for durable outcomes, focusing on pocket creation, wound closure, and prevention of infection and device migration.

Presentation 3: Implantable Pulse Generator Pocket Creation

Faculty: Rany Abdallah, MD, PhD, MBA

Dr. Abdallah illustrates best practices for implantable pulse generator (IPG) pocket creation and tunneling, emphasizing incision planning, depth, and placement relative to patient anatomy and comfort. Learners observe meticulous hemostasis, irrigation, anchoring, and layered closure techniques that enhance wound healing and long-term device stability.
